Madrid’s plazas are like hidden gems scattered across the city, and Puerta del Sol? It’s the cherry on top! Picture this: evening vibes, chilling at the plaza, soaking in that delightful atmosphere. I mean, it’s like sitting in the heart of a Spanish telenovela – laughter, and all-around good vibes! Trust me, you’ll be swooning over Puerta del Sol faster than you can say ‘¡Olé!’ Check out more below and get ready for some serious love at first plaza sight! 🤗
Puerta del Sol, meaning “Gate of the Sun”, is the puclic square of Madrid, that is the centre of the radial network of the Spanish roads – Km 0! It is also the busiest place in Madrid. Here you’ll find the famous clock, whose bells mark the traditional eating of the 12 Grapes, and the beginning of New Year. And did you know that the new year’s celebration has been broadcast live since 1962? Crazy, right?
It’s funny to know, that Puerta del Sol that is the centre today, once was one of the gates to Madrid during the Middle Ages. As the town grew, this became the centre instead. And it’s so far the most loveliest centre of a capital I’ve ever seen. No kidding! 🥰
Of course, there are some mandatory places you have to see, and Plaza Mayor is one of them. Plaza Mayor is another puclic space in Madrid, pretty much located in the centre of Madrid, along witgh some other places (like Sol etc.). The speciality of Plaza Mayor is that this was the centre of the “Old Madrid”, and therefore it is interesting to many, as it dates back to the year 1580, and was originally called Plaza del Arrabal. It was used as the main market of Madrid back in the days. That’s the interesting history of Plaza Mayor. But if you ask me, that’s all. You have to see the place, and that’s it. Don’t go for lunch or dinner here, as there are far was better places to eat around this area.

Another lovely place is Plaza de Jacinto Benavente, that´s located close to the Museum of Illusion. A cosy place, where you can enjoy some helado or some coffee.
But still, Puerta del Sol is my favourite place in Madrid. I just LOVE the atmosphere here ♥️
