I’ve always dreamed of seeing the Northern Lights, though I never imagined it would be possible here in Denmark. I had even planned trips to Iceland or Finland to make this dream a reality. However, a few months ago, I discovered that others had witnessed the Northern Lights right here in Denmark.
Since then, I’ve joined the Facebook group “Northern Lights Warning in Denmark,” intrigued by the idea that these incredible displays could occasionally be seen in special circumstances. It seems that sightings of the Northern Lights in Denmark are becoming more frequent, which I find absolutely fascinating. I signed up for alerts so that I wouldn’t miss the chance to see them with my own eyes if the conditions were right. Unfortunately, I missed some spectacular aurora events in May, but I held out hope for another opportunity 😌
This week, that chance finally came – especially on Tuesday, which was supposed to be quite special. Sadly, I was in Herning and couldn’t make it outside the city center late at night 🥲 But, I was hopeful that I’d still get another chance over the weekend since the forecasts looked promising 🤞😃
And I was right! Last night, I finally got to see the Northern Lights, and it was absolutely surreal and breathtaking! To top it off, we even saw some shooting stars, as the Perseids meteor shower is still visible right now. My very first experience with meteor showers actually dates back to 1st grade, when we had just started after summer holidays. Our class teacher at the time, Helle, told us about shooting stars and the phenomenon of shooting stars, and that in August you can have the opportunity to see meteor showers caused by the Perseids. And on some specific nights in August that year, there was a great chance of seeing this. It was back in 1995 😉 I remember how excited I was and told my parents about it. When the night in question came, my dad took me out so I could have the experience of seeing shooting stars – and my teacher was right! There WERE shooting stars, and not just one. I saw several and was completely speechless. It was definitely an experience that paved the way for my interest in the sky and celestial bodies, which remains unchanged to this day 😄 Probably also why I’m such a sucker for experiencing specific phenomena, from Jupiter to the Northern Lights 🪐✨
Just to be sure, I took a quick shot from my window and was thrilled to see the Northern Lights. With that, we headed out of the city, driving a bit northward.
The sky was perfectly clear, the moon was a stunning yellow in the south, and the view to the north was wide open. I was ready to capture the moment! I brought my Canon camera, hoping to get some incredible shots, but I couldn’t quite get the settings right for my lens. Thankfully, my iPhone came to the rescue! 😅🙏🏾😮💨
I’ve also installed the Amazing Aurora App, and it’s quite fascinating to check the forecasts for the Northern Lights.
Here are the beautiful pictures I captured 😍

It was truly a beautiful and unforgettable experience. That first shot of the Northern Lights is definitely a “wow” moment! 😍🤩🥳
