Yesterday, I took a trip to Aarhus to spend some quality time with my dear “sis,” T. It had been a while since we last met, so I was really looking forward to seeing her again. And what better way to embrace the holiday season than by visiting Den Gamle By, the famous open-air museum in Aarhus? ☺️🎄
Funny enough, despite having lived in Aarhus for several years, I had never actually visited Den Gamle By or ARoS – two of the city’s most well-known attractions. But this year changed that! I had the chance to visit ARoS earlier, and now, thanks to T’s annual pass, I was finally getting to explore Den Gamle By as well 😅
T had spoken so highly of the place, so I was curious to see if it would live up to her enthusiasm. She also raved about their famous æbleskiver (Danish pancake balls), saying they were an absolute must-try. So naturally, I was more than ready for a cozy December day filled with history, nostalgia, and delicious treats! 😃
Stepping into the past…
After meeting T in front of Den Gamle By, we locked away our belongings and set off on our little time-traveling adventure. And honestly? I was pleasantly surprised!
Founded in 1914, Den Gamle By is the world’s first open-air museum dedicated to urban history and culture. It’s designed like an old market town, with 75 historic buildings from different eras, spanning from the 1500s to the early 2000s – all carefully relocated from 25 different Danish cities. Some homes and shops have been preserved as time capsules, showing exactly how life looked in different periods, all the way up to the 21st century.

Walking through the cobblestone streets, I felt like I was moving through history, witnessing how people lived, worked, and thrived over the past 300 years. From grand bourgeois homes to modest working-class dwellings, the contrast was fascinating.
One of the highlights for me was the 2000-2014 street. Seeing objects and elements from my teenage years felt incredibly nostalgic – it was like stepping into a time machine! It’s funny how something as simple as an old mobile phone, a childhood poster, or a vintage shop sign can transport you back to another time 😌🥹
That said, I also found the 1950-1974 section particularly charming. There’s something about that era – the classic shop signs, the warm street lighting, the vintage cars – that feels so cozy and elegant. It was like stepping into an old Danish film 🥰
Beyond just exploring the different time periods, it was also interesting to learn more about Aarhus’ history. I already knew bits and pieces from conversations with my colleague M, but seeing it all laid out in this immersive way made it even more engaging.
After wandering through the past, it was time for a well-deserved treat – and what better way to warm up in the chilly December air than with freshly made æbleskiver and a steaming cup of hot cocoa? Let me tell you, T was not exaggerating – the æbleskiver from Den Gamle By were absolutely delicious! Light, fluffy – pure holiday perfection 😍😍

So if you ever find yourself in Aarhus during the holiday season, I highly recommend visiting Den Gamle By. It’s a cozy and nostalgic trip through time, wrapped up in the perfect festive atmosphere.
All in all, my first visit to Den Gamle By turned out to be far more magical than I had expected. There’s something special about walking through different eras, experiencing how life evolved, and then ending the day with good company, delicious treats, and a warm drink in hand 😍
After our visit to Den Gamle By, we headed back to T’s place, where we made a delicious TikTok Pasta for dinner. We paired it with a wonderfully sweet Elderflower Frizzante, which was absolutely perfect – especially since Frizzante happens to be my favorite kind of wine! 😉

And now, I can officially say I’ve checked off two of Aarhus’ biggest attractions this year! 😉
