History, Waffles, and Bitter Frappe: Wrapping Up Our Greek Adventure 🤗🥺

On the last day of our vacation in Athens, we decided to visit the Archaeological Museum of Athens.

But before diving into history, one must get some breakfast, right? 😄 We headed to The Makers once again, as we were blown away by their food the first time. This time, I went for something a bit sweeter – deciding to try their famous Greek frappe along with a sweet chocolate waffle topped with vanilla ice cream. The waffle? Absolutely mind-blowing! Soooo yummy!! The frappe though? Not so much. I couldn’t manage more than a sip – it was just too bitter for me 😅

With breakfast out of the way, we were ready to soak up some history. The Archaeological Museum of Athens is one of those must-see spots in the city, packed with artifacts that trace the incredible timeline of Greek civilization. This museum holds treasures from all over Greece, including the famous Mask of Agamemnon and the Antikythera Mechanism, an ancient device that’s often considered the first analog computer. If you’re a history lover, it’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in Athens’ past – after all, this city is like the mother of Western civilization!

After wandering through the museum’s endless halls of ancient artifacts, we stopped for lunch at our beloved Greco’s (of course!), before taking a quick break. Then, it was time for our next adventure. Where to? The beach!

This one was A’s idea – she’d been talking about having a beach day for a while. Initially, I wasn’t too excited about it. She even suggested going solo while I did something else, but honestly, I hate the idea of doing separate things when we’re on a trip together. So, I ended up tagging along. Does that make sense? 😅

We hopped on a bus and made our way to Alimos/Kalamaki Beach, one of Athens’ many nearby beaches. The Athens Riviera is just a short trip from the city center, and it’s dotted with beautiful beaches like Vouliagmeni, Glyfada, and Alimos. We rented sun loungers and spent the afternoon reading, lounging, and enjoying the soft sand and clear water. A perfect way to wind down after several days of exploring the city.

We weren’t super hungry afterward, but there was one food goal we had to meet before leaving Athens: trying loukoumades, the iconic Greek dessert. These delicious fried dough balls are often served with honey and cinnamon, but can also be topped with chocolate, nuts, or even ice cream. Dating back to ancient times, they were once given to winners of the Olympic Games. Of course, we couldn’t leave Athens without tasting them!

We asked some locals for the best loukoumades spot and were pointed to Lukumadez, conveniently within walking distance from Vrachos Suites. Perfect! We arrived around 9pm, but were immediately greeted by a gigantic queue 🤯😳. Clearly, this place was popular! But we were determined, so we stood in line and waited… and waited. Finally, at 9:30pm, we placed our order – regular loukoumades with chocolate sauce and chopped almonds. It seemed like a safe bet, right? Wrong! They turned out to be dry and tasteless. 😭 We couldn’t help but wonder if the traditional honey-topped version would’ve been better, but by then it was too late. We had run out of time. Feeling a bit disappointed, we headed back to the hotel for an early night since we had an early flight in the morning.

Despite the loukoumades letdown, it was still an amazing vacation filled with history, culture, and even a bit of beachside relaxation. Cheers to another fun adventure in Athens!
