You might have heard about murungai (moringa) and its benefits. It’s something people in Asia have been eating for generations, but only recently people in the west “recognized” it as a superfood. Not only the tree’s leaves, but also the sticks and bark are useful, and have been used in food and for medication, mainly in Siddha Maruthuvam, for ages. The word muringa is actually derived from the tamil name murungai and the malayali name muringa.
We use the sticks very much, and it’s easy to buy them in the local tamil stores, but the leaves are not always imported. Whenever we are able to buy them, we do, because we love them and of course of the benefits.
Mango lassi – YUMMY!!
Lassi is an Indian yoghurt drink. Originally it was a mixture of yoghurt, salt and other spices. The Tamils make a thinner version, called mor/moar, which is my faveourite sour yoghurt drink. When it comes to lassi, I prefer the one with mango. I have now made it several times, and we love to drink it now and then 😉
Achcharu is a very popular side dish in Sri Lanka, and there are 2 varieties of it, either the Jaffna style or the Sinhalese style. Achcharu is actually spiced, pickled greens, that is eaten as a side dish for rice or pittu. It’s a must have in the tamil kitchen, if you ask me. No meal is complete without achcharu 😉
Pickled onions is nowadays something that can be eaten with almost anything that’s not sweet; let it be salads, sandwich, cheese, burger, soups and other warm meals. I love pickled onions as much as I love the tamil achcharu 😉 And guess what?? I can even eat pickled onions with rice & curry 😉
This is one of the easiest recipes 😉 I only started to love Thai food during my visit to Berlin, where we went to Cha Chã Positive Eating, where we gut the yummiest Thai noodle soup. Then I tried make my own Thai noodle soup sevearal times, and I also bring some for lunch at work 😉
