The day finally came when I had to go back to university.

A new beginning after completing the bachelor’s programme in Audiology. It should be said that the year I started is actually the first to receive the title “Master’s in Audiology”, where it used to be called “audiologopaedics”. Nice to get rid of such a long title 😀

Anyway, the graduation ceremony at the end of June ’11 was beautiful, and Mythos came and played for us. Even though I’m not usually into accordion and stuff like that, I was very impressed by Mythos. But that goes without saying when they have previously played for the Queen herself 😉

Now you’re probably wondering, what is this really all about? I understand, audiology isn’t just something everyone knows, and most people will probably say “audi-what-what?”. Yes, I studied a bachelor’s degree in audiology with a technical specialisation. However, from September 2011 it’s just “audiology”, which is much easier! Audiology is the study of hearing impairment, and during the programme you learn about the different causes of hearing impairment, how to treat it, and much much more! The direction I chose – technical specialisation – delves into the technical aspects of treating hearing impairment, and we learn how to take different measurements, fitting hearing aids and so on. An incredibly exciting programme, and I would highly recommend pretty much everyone I meet to take this particular programme – that’s how much passion I have for this field 😉

Why I chose this programme myself is thought-provoking for many. We all know that we couldn’t survive without our senses, but how many of us actually think about it? For example, have you ever thought that listening to loud music actually affects your hearing – perhaps to the extent that it can be directly harmful to your hearing? It was just such thoughts that struck me when I accidentally came across this programme during a search on ug.dk.

Since I sing and play the violin in my spare time, and otherwise spend a lot of my time on music, I suddenly realised how important hearing is to me – and not least how important it is to take care of your hearing. Many of us don’t realise this when we’re listening to music, going to a concert or anything else where hearing is important. We don’t realise how damaging it can be, and what do we do if one day it goes completely wrong? That’s why I became interested in the audiology programme, and over time I became more and more passionate about it. Today, I don’t regret my choice at all and am proud to have studied/to study something that is different from many others.

I started the programme at the University of Southern Denmark in 2008, and in the summer of 2011 I completed the bachelor’s part with a great result 😉

The summer holidays seemed very long and I had no plans, so I was looking forward to getting started again. We started university on 31 August and it was great to see my friends again 🙂 Although on the one hand I was happy to see them all and happy to start again, on the other hand I was a bit lost, as during the summer holidays I had forgotten most things :-s (oops?!) Fortunately, the lecturer was pedagogical enough and during the lessons I slowly caught up with all my knowledge.

Actually, it looks quite difficult and I sense that it will be a tough time, but who knows? Maybe I’m wrong 🙂 Now we have started and two, possibly long years are waiting for me – let’s see what time has to show 🙂
